Amenorrhea

The absence of menstruation is one of the problems that most concern us women and amenorrhea is one of the types of absence, which can be caused by a dysfunction of the hypothalamus (brain), ovaries, vagina or uterus.

Diagnosis

Amenorrhea can be transient, intermittent or permanent and is usually classified into two types:

1

Primary

Absence of menstruation in women (15 years and older) who have not yet had menstrual cycles.

2

Secondary

Absence of menstruation for more than 3 months in women who previously had regular menstrual cycles, or 6 months in those with irregular menses.

Integrative consultation

When amenorrhea lasts more than 3 months, or it is oligomenorrhea (less than 9 menstrual cycles per year or a cycle length greater than 35 days), investigation is required.

Adequate stress management, proper supplementation and nutritional support are basic in the treatment of amenorrhea. Because treatment should not always include contraceptives.

Integrative gynecology looks for the origin and treats the cause of amenorrhea in a comprehensive manner.

Amenorrhea can be primary (no menstruation) or secondary (missed periods for more than 4 months or scanty periods for more than 6 months). And within each of them, there are multiple causes. The most frequent causes of secondary amenorrhea are those secondary to polycystic ovary syndrome or those of central cause (stress).

Always. Whenever you have missed periods, you should perform a urine pregnancy test, if it is negative, and you have had no periods for more than 4 months or 6 months with scanty periods than usual, you should consult your doctor.

Can I get pregnant if I have amenorrhea?

Of course! Although it is most common that having amenorrhea there is a lack of ovulation, this is not always the case. So if you miss your period, don’t stop taking care of your pregnancy.
